Hello all,

I’m sure many of you will remember last year’s social events. For those of you that don’t, well you missed out! We had aspecial appearance from Wes’ sister… Linda Lind! Also, prior to starring as Alan in the blockbuster hit ‘The Hangover’, Jimmy Fu started his acting career at race night. All of these events are great fun, but when was the last time we really went to town? A time when you could bring your friends to the club for a fancy evening? Well, now’s your chance!

Please see the picture attached to this post for details of WCC’s Summer Ball. The event will be held on Friday 23rd July 2010 (Friday of cricket week) and will consist of a sit down meal (not curry), held in a luxurious marquee where you can dance the night away. If you have any song requests, do let me know as the DJ caters for all genres.

Unfortunately, due to restrictions on the venue, we are only able to cater for 60 or 90 people – there’s no middle ground. Therefore, the first 60 people to pay will be guaranteed a ticket, after this, you will be held on a reserved list to see if we make it to 90. If you would like to attend the Summer Ball, please make a cheque out to “Warlingham Cricket Club”, and send it to:

I’ve got most of the books from Paul Clarke, but few are missing. In the first instance, I’d like to send an email attempt to locate the missing ones which are:

Sat 2s 2009 (I think Masood has this one) & 2003,
Sat 3s 2009 (Graham has this one), 2008 & 2007,
Sun 1s 2003,
Sun 2s 2003 & 2002,
Mid-Week 2002 & 2000

If anybody has got one of these, knows where it might be, or indeed has any books from earlier years, can they please let me have them?

I’ve got 4th XI books for 2004 & 2003 – I don’t know what other years we had a 4th team, hence how many books I’m looking for. Richard Spurring has all the Wednesday books that are known to exist.

Should keep me busy during the long winter evenings.

The change back to the 50 overs-a-side format had no effect on this Third Division match at Chessington with neither side managing to last their full ration of overs. The home team won the toss, batted first on a pitch still a little damp after heavy morning dew and made a steady start despite an early wicket. Ricky Patel bowled his ten overs straight through and finished with an impressive 2-18 with 5 maidens and, with Dan Chrystie also chipping with two wickets, Chessington were four down for 65 after twenty overs. Both Chris Norton (34) and Daniel Yarnley (16) failed to build on good foundations and the middle order struggled against Mahesh Amin and Wes Lind who bowled ten overs between them for only 13 runs before being rested to allow Warlingham’s two young spinners, Nihal Patel and Devik Amin to try their hand. Although they bowled well, the run-rate increased thanks to as Chessington’s skipper, Paul Willis, but he was caught at slip for 37 made in just over an hour. The youthful pair took wickets: but at 140-8 after 41 overs, perhaps Warlingham should have re-introduced the more experienced bowlers. Instead they continued with Nihal and Devik and a stand of forty developed, mainly due to Nick Bailey who made 34 including three straight sixes. Nihal eventually took 3-58, including a caught-and-bowled from a very firmly hit shot; but it was the return of Wes that ended the innings on 182 after 47.1 overs.

When Warlingham batted wickets fell regularly aided by some good catching, including a stunning effort by Bailey at extra-cover to dismiss Dilpesh of a full-blooded drive. The run rate was slow but would have worse if it weren’t for the steady stream of wides. Andy Robson took the early wickets, his ten overs earning him 4-34 before he was replaced by Dan Yarnley whose 8-over spell cost only 26 runs for two wickets. Only Wes Lind, batting at seven, looked comfortable. Aided by the continuing flow of wides, he kept the scoreboard ticking over, but no other batsman could build a partnership with him. After he was finally run out from a direct hit for 27, the innings ended quickly. Warlingham had scored only 84 runs off the bat, their total boosted by 35 wides donated by their generous hosts.

Warlingham: Nigel Field, Dilpesh Amin, Alex Pizzey, Nishan Naidoo, Andy McNamee, Dan Chrystie, Wes Lind, Nihal Patel, Ricky Patel, Devik Amin, Mahesh Amin.

Bank of England run out easy winners in this match on a true Roehampton pitch with a fast outfield. Warlingham’s preparations were disrupted by the late withdrawal of all-rounder Shane Patel as a result of illness that meant their bowling attack was limited to left-arm seamer Dan Chrystie and four spinners. Uncle opened with Dan and although Uncle had an early success, trapping Lawrence leg before, Oliver Dunthorne and Jon Relleen made steady progress and with few alarms except for some curious running between the wickets. Eventually Relleen was run out as had been threatened for some time and the hosts were 120-2 after 29 overs. Damon Ridgeway then joined Dunthorne and added 73 in 11 overs in a partnership that did much to take the game away from Warlingham. Ridgeway was well caught on the boundary by Macca but Elliott Hannah with 22 from 16 balls and Tim Hoolahan with 16 from 11 balls helped Dunthorne, who finished on 109 not out, to post an imposing total of 267-6 in the allotted 50 overs.

Warlingham began well enough although Nigel was run out for 15 (the third time out of four visits to the ground he said – how is Steve Wright these days?), but Alex Pizzey again looked in great form.

Dilpesh was caught trying to force the pace and was replaced by Nishan Naidoo who looked anything but in great form. Alex drove with real power and finesse and pulled two huge sixes but was caught on 46 in the 27th over. At this point the relative scores were similar, but whereas the Bank’s middle order accelerated the run-rate, Nish and Macca could not get the accurate bowling away consistently enough. Their partnership eventually reached 48 when Macca was caught and bowled by Dunthorne for 20, and in strode Ian Pizzey, the late replacement for Shane Patel. Although at this stage 116 were needed from under eleven overs, he soon set about biffing the bowlers to all parts of the ground. Naidoo, by now gaining some fluency, joined in but the pair could not quite maintain the hectic rate required. Nevertheless, 53 were added in twenty minutes before Nish was out for 45, leaving ‘Big Pizz’ and Wes Lind the small matter of 63 in four overs. Wes connected well but found the boundary fielders but Ian kept smiting mightily, making the home team grateful, and the skipper rueful, that he had not come in earlier. He fell in the final over for 44 from 35 balls and Warlingham ended on 237-7, much closer than had seemed likely, but never really threatening to pull off the win they so-desperately needed.

Warlingham: Nigel Field, Dilpesh Amin, Alex Pizzey, Nishan Naidoo, Andy McNamee, Ian Pizzey, Wes Lind, Dan Chrystie, Nihal Patel, Devik Amin, Mahesh Amin.

The home team benefitted from an excellent innings of 82 in 105 balls at the top of the order by their occasional player, Navin Nayak. His second-wicket partnership of 145 with Greg Atherstone, who made 41 (he never made this many for us), set up the challenging first innings total of 236 all out after Warlingham won the toss and decided to field first. Our bowlers were unable to contain Wimbledonian’s batsmen and by the time Nayak was eventually caught off Devik Amin the run rate was well over 5 per over. Despite a middle-order collapse, in which Devik Amin took two further wickets, the hosts recovered from 178-6 to 236 before Mahesh Amin took the last two wickets in the final over. Devik’s 3-36 from 10 overs was his best yet for the ones, Uncle was as economical as ever with 2-29 from 9.5 overs, and Shane took 3-21 from 7 on his return to the side, but they did not receive enough support from the other bowlers.

Warlingham’s second wicket pairing of Shane Patel and Dan Chrystie, promoted to number 3 in the absence of Alex Pizzey, batted well and kept the scoreboard ticking over at about the required rate, but Shane was well caught by Jaco Louw (remember him? – quiet unassuming chap who won’t say boo to a goose) for 31. The introduction of the slower bowlers, Louw, Cezar Redeker and Donald Dunsmore, slowed the scoring but Chrystie reached his maiden First XI 50 from 71 balls. However, he was bowled immediately afterwards and Johnny Morris was out in the same over. Nigel, batting at 4, looked as solid as ever in his 36, but the rest of the order batted as befits a team at the bottom of the table. All three spinners gave us problems but it was Dunsmore who took the wickets, 6-26 in his 10 overs; and we were all out for 160.

Warlingham: Nishan Naidoo, Shane Patel, Dan Chrystie, Nigel Field, Johnny Morris, Andy McNamee, Hitesh Patel, Wes Lind, Nihal Patel, Devik Amin, Mahesh Amin.

It’s been a long time coming, four seasons to be precise, but Mike Taylor’s gallant third XI celebrated promotion as they despatched visitors Warlingham with a 92 run victory at Alexandra Rec.

Having lost the all important toss for the ‘umpteenth’ time this season, Epsom set out to post a suitable total inside the normal fifty overs.

As Dave Hewitt straight drove the first ball powerfully for four, the intent was clear. However two balls later a similar shot without the feet movement saw keeper Lunt snap up the in form opener leaving the home side at 4-1. Youngster Jack Waters (36) showed a cool head to then build a solid 63 stand with Rohit Shah over the next sixteen overs before playing back to the pacey Pizzey and being bowled. Whilst Shah accumulated “Burke style” ones and twos, Rob ‘beefy’Kempson (29) smashed three big sixes adding forty seven in just nine overs. His departure was to a brave return catch to Pizzey as the batsman launched into what would have otherwise been a certain boundary. Just ten runs later Shah then fell six short of his half century, with the score on 124, trying to open up with an attacking drive that was snaffled up by the opposition skipper at cover. So with two new batsmen in with four wickets down, the Warlingham tails were up. But Baker, together with his skipper had other plans, steadying the innings. They proceeded to stroke a controlled 65 run partnership, with Baker taking the premier role. When Taylor was bowled by Pizzey for 22, Baker continued to plunder the bowling reaching his well deserved fifty in just eleven overs. When he became Pizzey’s fourth victim with his score on 62, the countback showed there was only one single amongst his tally. (before the mathematicians raise a query, he managed a five following an overthrow).

Steve Hewitt’s whirlwind unbeaten 25 from six scoring shots, including three sixes rounded off the innings to allow Taylor to declare at 240 for 6 off 44.5 overs. Pizzey’s four wickets cost him 71 runs in an 18.5 over stint, as Dunning tried seven bowlers during the Epsom onslaught.

Warlingham looked to make an attacking start with both openers looking to take on Steve Hewitt and pace man Mark Kasey. 23 runs in by the eighth over and a Kasey short ball was taken on by Lunt. The bat was too slow for this quickie resulting in a catch swallowed up by Hewitt (D) at mid on. Hewitt (S) the younger in his fifth and sixth took over the wicket taking mantle by snapping up three wickets without conceeding a run. The first removed Cambell’s off stump, followed by a diving catch at backward point by Baker and the third being a first baller to claim Thapar with a ’salmon’ catch at gulley by the ageless Taylor.

Kamal Desai took over from Kasey’s first spell, enjoying almost immediate success. His second over saw the number five bat’s stumps rocked, followed two overs later with a pair, which included another gulley catch for the skipper and another fist baller to dismiss Fuller. Meanwhile, Vincent had doggedly remained at the other end of falling wickets, taking on all of the Epsom bowlers with differing degrees of effectiveness. The West Indian accumulated a brave half century including four sixes. But although on track for a potential century, Desai put paid to that aspiration clean bowling him for 72 in the thirty fifth over with the score on 127 and the end of the visitor’s innings in sight.

Warlingham’s six middle order batsmen had all been dismissed without scoring, so a valiant 30 from club chairman Paul Clarke did offer a glimmer of resistance, whilst Desai rounded off his invaluable contribution with the ball claiming a five wicket haul at a cost of 40 in a ten over spell. When Clarke finally offered up his wicket to the Hewitt duo, which saw Steve doing the catching off Dave’s only second ball, having just replaced Desai, the match was won, 13 points in the bag and promotion secured AT LAST.

Putting feet up for Winter is now a well deserved reward for the lads, with the 2010 season a long way off, but knowing it will be in Division ONE is so comforting.
