Chessington 182, 47.1 overs; Warlingham 123, 37 overs.

The change back to the 50 overs-a-side format had no effect on this Third Division match at Chessington with neither side managing to last their full ration of overs. The home team won the toss, batted first on a pitch still a little damp after heavy morning dew and made a steady start despite an early wicket. Ricky Patel bowled his ten overs straight through and finished with an impressive 2-18 with 5 maidens and, with Dan Chrystie also chipping with two wickets, Chessington were four down for 65 after twenty overs. Both Chris Norton (34) and Daniel Yarnley (16) failed to build on good foundations and the middle order struggled against Mahesh Amin and Wes Lind who bowled ten overs between them for only 13 runs before being rested to allow Warlingham’s two young spinners, Nihal Patel and Devik Amin to try their hand. Although they bowled well, the run-rate increased thanks to as Chessington’s skipper, Paul Willis, but he was caught at slip for 37 made in just over an hour. The youthful pair took wickets: but at 140-8 after 41 overs, perhaps Warlingham should have re-introduced the more experienced bowlers. Instead they continued with Nihal and Devik and a stand of forty developed, mainly due to Nick Bailey who made 34 including three straight sixes. Nihal eventually took 3-58, including a caught-and-bowled from a very firmly hit shot; but it was the return of Wes that ended the innings on 182 after 47.1 overs.

When Warlingham batted wickets fell regularly aided by some good catching, including a stunning effort by Bailey at extra-cover to dismiss Dilpesh of a full-blooded drive. The run rate was slow but would have worse if it weren’t for the steady stream of wides. Andy Robson took the early wickets, his ten overs earning him 4-34 before he was replaced by Dan Yarnley whose 8-over spell cost only 26 runs for two wickets. Only Wes Lind, batting at seven, looked comfortable. Aided by the continuing flow of wides, he kept the scoreboard ticking over, but no other batsman could build a partnership with him. After he was finally run out from a direct hit for 27, the innings ended quickly. Warlingham had scored only 84 runs off the bat, their total boosted by 35 wides donated by their generous hosts.

Warlingham: Nigel Field, Dilpesh Amin, Alex Pizzey, Nishan Naidoo, Andy McNamee, Dan Chrystie, Wes Lind, Nihal Patel, Ricky Patel, Devik Amin, Mahesh Amin.
